Medical parasitology and tropical medicine sector in Georgia was initiated at the beginning of the 20th century. The strong scientific-parasitology school was established by professors: Spiridon Virsaladze, Simon Kandelaki and later by George Maruashvili, who played the largest role in the eradication of malaria in Georgia and in the fight against a number of parasitic diseases. They introduced the innovative methods for epidemic surveillance of parasitic and tropical diseases, diagnosis, treatment and prevention

Every doctor-parasitologist grown up on Georgian parasitological school traditions, including PhD Doctors and professional laboratory specialists, currently continue medical activities in the Research Institute of Medical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine. The Institute’s field of research is all directions associated to the medical parasitology and tropical medicine.
